We’re never supposed to be vulnerable at all. And I think being a Black woman like that, that’s a given-like, we’re supposed to be strong. Strong and strength-for me, that’s an easy one to play. With the characters I’ve been lucky enough to portray, I think, a lot of my own strength comes out through it. “That is strength-being vulnerable and being open and letting things affect you…. These performances are cathartic for the actor, who identifies strength in owning one’s vulnerability.
